Dan @ Level 1, EARS, Nov, 2007

Dan Goldsmith has achieved Level 1 with his new rocket, Apollo II.

After a year of planning and building, everything came together at November EARS, 2007.

It was suitably followed by the fireworks spectacular!

What an amazing day. With perfect weather, Dan's friends Oliver Neil Smith and Kes Daood, joined him for the event.

The flight was overseen by RSO Cath Bashford. Cath had previously certified Oliver at Level 1 during UKRA Heckington 2006. Of course, at that event it was Dan supporting Oliver.

Cath works with Dan to help him prepare for the launch. Not too many tricky questions.

Kes and Oliver supported Dan during the event. They had to wait a long time to fly their rockets while Dan was preparing for his Level 1 flight. That's friendship.

Note that Oliver is giving a "I know what he is going through" kind of smile. Oliver did all this in 2006 on WOWROC2. He knows how emotional it can be.

And now Kes is planning for Level 1 in 2008.

Dan takes great care putting the rocket on the pad.

A shot of the take off - unfortunately into the sun.

ABOUT CATH BASHFORD

Cath Bashford is an experienced rocketeer. She was the first female UKRA level 3 certified flyer in the UK and the first ever female Tripoli Prefect.

You can visit Cath's web site here and take a look at photographs of her expeditions to large rocket events in the United States such as BALLS and LDRS.

We thank Cath for the time she spent with Dan during Nov EARS 2007.

An amazing picture of the launch taken by Niall
Oswald. (thank you Niall)

You can see Dan and Cath in the background.

The rocket is already bending over. This was a worry
for everyone. It caused the rocket not to reach its
projected altitude - and led to some zipper damage.

We still don't know why this happened. An inquiry
has been set up.

Here is Apollo 2 - based on a modified Sprint
BSD kit - in flight. What a lovely picture.

Recovery was successful, but there was some
uncertainty over whether Dan could be given
Level 1.

Minor damage to the rocket is evident. The
metal reinforcing ring prevented more serious
damage.

The gang return to the PARS basecamp, worried that
Level 1 might not be granted. This was Dan's last
possibility for 2007.

But all is well ...

The RSO, and Cath, decides the damage is minor,
because theoretically the rocket could fly again the
same day.

Cath also gave Dan some advice for the repair.

Dan had achieved Level 1 in 2007, which was his
goal.
He is now studying for Level 2.
