Wings (or is it Wind) over EARS - Duxford 2006

We arrived at EARS with great hope. Seb wanted to try for a new E-Class record, and Oliver wanted to go 4-Grain on WOWROC2. It is clear from the start that the wind was coming in, and fast. By the time everything was set up, conditions were far from ideal.

A very unusual EARS. Wind over EARS led us to Wings over Duxford.

We were interested to see the M-Class launch pad. Custom built from aluminium, it had adjustment rods for different width rockets.

We think this is Ady Waters, trying for the F-Class Record. Here, he is polishing the launch rods in order to offer the least resistance at take off.

A micro-hybrid. Amazingly small.

Well, its 1PM, and not a rocket has launched. There is only one thing to do about that .... PARS has got to test the wind. There is nothing for it but to launch Blue Samurai on a D. Oliver prepares the flight card.

Here we go ...

It was NOT good. The wind took hold of it, and it wheeled around. So we tried an E. No better. I thought rockets were supposed to fly up, not across the field. On this basis, Seb abandons his E-Class attempt, especially as the wind lies in the direction of trees.

So we make some new friends ... who have a LOT of rockets.

This is Katie (or is it Katy) with Egg Lofter

And more children try their hand at a launch
in the wind.

Quite a few people have arrived, but few rockets are
flying. We make the decision to cut our losses and
visit Duxford for the air show.

A final look around ...

And here we are, at the 2006 Dusford Air Show.
This plane was HUGE.

The show was great, especially the F16 aerobatics

We even met the pilots of the Black Cats - the Royal
Navy Helicopter crew. The boys got their autographs.

There were lots of tanks in the museum.

So there it is, a very unusual EARS. Wind over EARS
led us to Wings over Duxford.
