PARS Goes To The Movies

PARS announces the Ultimate Rockets and Space Movies Web Page. Inspirational movies about rockets and space (and some aliens)

Why? Just because we wanted to.

October Sky is the inspirational story of a boy who builds model rockets, wants to be a space engineer and whose father does not understand. The moral is, never listen to your parents, listen to your heart. Don't be a coal miner.

Space Race is the utterly compelling and gripping tale of Russia and America's race for space and miliary supremacy. Told in docu-drama format over four hours, this BBC series is both exciting and engrossing. Prepare to live the dream.

We never would have had rockets without test pilots. This is their tale, and it's the best. Unmissable drama on the ground and in the air set against the historical context of man's efforts to reach space.

Hollywood gets it right. This is THE definitive story of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission to the Moon. Tom Hanks rocks.

Man's first mission to Mars. Here is what could go wrong. Cannot tell you more without giving away the plot. Watch it and prepare for a thrilling story that will leave you guessing until the end.

Why did we include a story about a journey to the bottom of the ocean? Simple. Here, the director conjures up a world of inner space and advanced underwater craft that if it wasn't set at the bottom of the sea would be set in space. And yes, there are aliens.

Often compared to Kubrick's 2001, but although both bring a metaphysical dimension to bear on space exploration, Solaris has a claustrophobic intensity which grips the attention over three hours of typically Tarkovskian stasis. A cosmonaut is sent to investigate dis-appearances on the space station orbiting the planet Solaris, only to be confronted by his past in the guise of his dead wife. Solaris is one of the milestones of science fiction in cinema.

The Dawn of Man, a journey to the outer
solar system and contact with extraterresial
intelligence as we trip over to the next phase
of our evolution. At least, that's what we think
this is about. Quite simply the greatest
science movie of all time.

One women's obsession to find life
beyond the earth. Global politics and
religious implications are threaded
through the excitement of making
"contact" and finding a lot more than
anyone could ever have imagined.

As NASA and the global community
prepare for a real mission to Mars,
it is worth taking a retrospective look
at Mars movies. A lot goes wrong,
but they find a whole lot more than
they expected. Mars was inhabited.
They are us.

Here is the ultimate Mars disaster
movie. Everything that can go wrong
goes wrong. Just fantastic. A fascinating
look at a most inhospitable and
dangerous environment.

Here's what happens when you meet
them. Spielberg creates the definitive
extraterrestrial experience for a generation
touched by the Apollo moon landings.

What happens if they are not quite as
friendly as Speilberg predicts? Prepare
for the end of the world. Earth's fight
back for its Independence Day.

And while we are on the topic of
unfriendly aliens, Speilberg who gave
the ultimate feel-good about extra-
terresials in Close Encouinters here
updates H.G.Wells classic tale of
a failed attempt to colonize Earth.

And of course, how could any list of
space films be complete without
the STAR WARS dual-trilogy.
Voted by members, STAR WARS
just had to be there.
