| WOWROC2 Level 1 Cert, UKRA, June, 2006 | |||||||||||||||
Oliver Neil Smith, 12, has become the first member of PARS to gain a UKRA Level 1 Certicication with his rocket, WOWROC2. The flight was overseen by RSO Cash Bashford. Read on to find out about how to get a Level 1 certification. (Our thanks to Mark Burnett who took the photographs) You can also find out how Oliver built WOWROC2 here

Oliver naturally had a little nervousness, as the reality of the launch comes home to him. After months of design, and weeks of construction, the day is finally here.
Oliver watches another rocket, and starts to wonder what will happen to WOWROC2 when the launch sequence begins.
At this point, Oliver realizes that all the work has been brought together, and everything now depends on how careful we have been.
Oliver and Cath make final preparations. Here they are preparing the igniter for the Pro38 H153 motor.
PARS members Danial Goldsmith, Alfie Shaw and Oliver listen to Cath explain to them the safety rules about attaching the igniter. It is imperative to check open circuit on the launch system. Touch the wires together to make sure there is no residual charge. Keep a few feet from the rocket during final preparation. Cath explained that if a rocket takes off and you are close, it will be very scary, but not necessarily dangerous. Such an event is fortunately easily avoided. ABOUT CATH BASHFORD Cath Bashford is an experienced rocketeer. She was the first female UKRA level 3 certified flyer in the UK and the first ever female Tripoli Prefect. You can visit Cath's web site here and take a look at photographs of her expeditions to large rocket events in the United States such as BALLS and LDRS. Cath's advice was crucial to Oliver being granted Level 1, and we thank her for the time she spent with us during UKRA 2006.
